STX Marine is pleased to announce the award of two independent contracts for the complete design packages of Compact Semi-submersible (CSS) vessels.  The CSS concept was developed by STX Marine over a five year period in cooperation with Hallin Marine; Minnow Marine Projects Limited and M3 Marine.  This work has resulted in a multi-hull platform that provides enhanced seakeeping characteristics with a high deck area and load capacity that is capable of undertaking a wide variation of roles.
To emphasize this fact, the two contracts recently secured by STXM are for completely different operating roles as follows:

  • The primary function of the diesel/electric CSS ordered by Hallin Marine is to facilitate well intervention; well stimulation and subsea installations.
  • The CSS ordered by Marine Assets Corporation (MAC), an accommodation variant, will have 230 cabins with the majority being 2 man and all with en-suite facilities.  The vessel will be able to accommodate a total of 430 industrial personnel, plus the marine crew of 20 and the 50 hotel and catering staff. Other facilities will include a Gym, Cinema, recreation rooms and offices for both clients and crew.

STX Marine is under contract to provide detailed engineering packages with each of the shipyards selected by Hallin Marine and MAC to build the vessels.

In May 2008, STX Canada Marine Inc. (STXM) and BMT Fleet Technology Limited (BMT Fleet) were awarded the contract for the Definition, Engineering, Logistics and Management Support (DELMS) contract for the Canadian Arctic Offshore Patrol Ship (AOPS) project. As part of this contract, STXM has recently completed a Classification Design Drawing Package for the AOPS which is currently under review by . The drawing package will be reviewed by Lloyds Register. The hull form will be proven through model testing and seakeeping analysis and will be mandated for use along with some specific design parameters, with the remainder of the design and willto be used as design guidance. by the shipyards bidding on the construction contract.

The AOPS is 98 m long and is capable of speeds of over 17 knots in open water and 3 knots ice breaking in 1 m of level ice. The ship was designed to have good seakeeping performance in addition to good icebreaking performance so that the ship can be utilized for patrolling all three of Canada’s coastlines. STXM and BMT Fleet are currently assisting the DND Project Management Office in the development of the System Requirements Document (SRD) and RFP. which are both expected to be released to industry for proposals in the spring of 2010.
